| Custody & Caring International Conference | The University of Saskatchewan is hosting the 13th Biennial Custody & Caring International Conference next year October 5-7, 2013 in Regina. This conference provides a great way to network and learn more about this line of work. Some examples of topics that will be covered include, academic and community based partnerships, advocacy, aging offenders, chronic illness management and a variety more. There will be many guest speakers and presenters which will surely make this conference a success. |
This is program in the United States that has been developed as a continuing education course by the American Correctional Health Services Association. They found few continuing education courses that were pertinent to working in a correctional facility so they received provider status from the California Board of Registered Nursing and started their own. This website is only the beginning of their initiative but with support they will continue to educate those working in this environment. | |

Journal of Correctional Health Care (JCHC) is a peer-reviewed, quarterly journal that features original research, case studies, and best practices on issues important to correctional health care professionals. JCHC covers a lot of different topics from continuous quality improvement and risk management, to medical-legal issues. This website also includes a podcast that you can listen to for each issue released. | |

This website is provided by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care in America. Synopsis: Before the 1970s, much inmate health care was provided by other inmates, correctional officers and the occasional physician. The first documentation of correctional nursing may be a 1975 article by Rena Murtha, a director of nursing for a large correctional system. In her account, nurses were “a tool of the warden, a slave of the physician and an unknown to the patient.” |
